I have a 710 with a PERC 6/i internal and a PERC 6/e.

During POST I only see press "ctrl-R" for the 6/i integrated. If I select the 6/i will I be able to see the other PERC in the utility?

Migrate from 1Gbps to 10GBaseT ports for iSCSI to MD3220i from ESXi 5.5 Hosts

Our company has recently procured (2) Force 10 S4820T network switches with the intent of upgrading our switch fabric to 10Gbps across the board. Additionally, we have purchased (2) Intel X540 DP (Dual Port) 10GbaseT NICS for each of our (3) vmWare host servers.

Currently we are running (3) ESXi 5.5 U1 host servers in an HA cluster. There is (1) Dell R710 with (4) Broadcom 1Gbps nics dedicated to iSCSI traffic destined for (2) SANs - a DELL MD3220i and MD3800i. The other (2) hosts are DELL R720 servers with (6) Broadcom NICS dedicated to iSCSI traffic destined to the same target SANs. The R710 has a single vswitch defined for iSCSI traffic to both SANs, with (6) vmk ports defined. Each of the R720 host servers have (2) vswitches dedicated to iSCSI traffic. One each with (4) vmk ports matched to (4) 1Gbps nics dedicated to the MD3220i and one each with (2) vmk ports matched to (2) 1Gbps NICS dedicated to the MD3800i. All vswitches have jumbo frames enabled. All data stores are configured to use Round Robin multi-path I/O.This design gives us (4) active and (4) inactive paths to the MD3220i on each host and (2) active and (2) inactive paths on each host to the MD3800i.

Our intent is to use (2) of the (4) 10Gbps nics for all iSCSI traffic and (2) for general network/managemnt traffic. We would "retire" the 1Gbps nics entirely.

My questions/concerns are as follows:

  1. Even though each NIC dedicated to iSCSI traffic will now be 10Gbps, vs 1Gbps, will reducing the physical NIC count to (2) serve to defeat the purpose of the NIC upgrade?
  2. What ramifications are there to no longer having the iSCSI traffic destined for the MD3800i separate from that destined for the MD3220i?
  3. What are the ramifications of defining (4) paths on (2) vNICS for traffic destined to the MD3220i (one path for each subnet defined on the MD3220, as best practices dictate)?
  4. Since the MD3220i only has 1Gbps ports - (4) on each of (2) controllers, would it make sense to reconfigure the iSCSI ports on the MD3220? Currently there are (4) subnets, pairing the corresponding ports from each controller (I.E. 192.168.230.x = ports 0/0+1/0, 192.168.231.x =0/1+1/1, 192.168.232.x = 0/2+1/2, etc.) into (2).
  5. The S4820T switch is auto-sensing, so we are being assured by DELL we can attach the (8) ports from the MD3220i directly to the S4820T switches, but what are the ramifications of a 10Gbps NIC attempting to negotiate with one or more 1Gbps port? I have read stories of the 10Gbps NIC falling back to 1Gbps entirely until communication with the 1Gbps target is complete. This would be highly undesirable. Has anyone encounter such an issue?
  6. Finally, has anyone made a similar move with similar hardware?

Thanks in advance to anyone that might like to offer up their opinions and/or advise.

Regards,

Don

Initialize array in PowerVault md3220i

We need to 'sanitize" our PowerVault md3220i SAN Arrays so that all of the data is removed completely.  What is the best way to do this?  Do I reset the Storage ARray configuration? Or is there a way to initialzie the array(s)?

Thank you.

Storage Requirements - Help

Hello All.

I am looking to buy a storage device from Dell, but need your help in confirming that the model I selected is ok and hopefully score some points from you on the correct configuration to have. I have a storage device with 6TB data on it and need to come up with its replacement. The device is accessed by 250 users who can backup their data and share files via the pre-created shares. the current backup system is manual and will be changed to an automated system running BE2014 for all users. We are planning to give each user backup space totalling 20Gb plus we would like to retain 5GB per person for the document share space. My LAN speed is 10/100/1000 so data transfer speeds are good. My environment has R710 servers running on Server 2008 soon to be Server 2012 R2.

I selected either the MD1200 or the MD1400 as I was looking for expansion abilities and capacity to carry many drives. The challenge I have now is knowing of compatibility with my model server (it may be from the same manufacturer but may not work), if the solution can work with BE2014 as it is known that some hardware solutions lack compatibility with software solutions, if there are other drive options outside of those listed as being available for the server (4TB or any such drives).

Please help.

iSCSI controller card for TL2000/TL4000

We bought a used iSCI controller card (PN: F092G) We installed in a Dell TL4000 connected to laptop with ethernet cable.  The card shows 1 green light and 1 amber light.  We cannot see the card with the laptop.  Default IP address is supposed to be 10.10.10.10 so I don't know if previous owner changed the IP address or what.  We turned on the iSCSI initiator using laptop with windows 8 professional and cannot seem to see the iSCSI controller card.

Any ideas?

MD3200i as generic iSCSI Storage

Hello all!

I have a client who is interested in some iSCSI storage for about 20 video cameras.  We use *** cameras which each make a connection to iSCSI storage for all the video.  Would the MD3200i work for such a project?  I have access to one and it appears as if the unit only support VMware or Hyper-V as a host (or some other recognized single server host).

With many solutions out there like EMC, Iomega, and Buffalo, the unit just appears as an iSCSI target, and you can send many requesters to it.  With the Dell MD product it really seems like it'll only work if you "add" the host, and the only hosts that seem to be valid are the Windows or VM.

I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Thanks!

Powervault MD raid rebuildng

$

Hello,

I have a Powervault MD which is connected to a PowerEdge 2950. the Powervault MD is in a raid 5 configuration with 1TB drives.

I noticed that one drive is in a 'drive failed' state and another is in a 'predicted failure reported by drive'.

I went to replace the 'drive failed' drive and the replaced drive went to solid green 'drive is online' state instead of going to the rebuild mode. In previous HDD replacements that I have done directly on other PowerEdge 2950's, the drive would go into rebuild mode right after inserting it. Is it not rebuilding because one of the drives is in 'predicted failure' mode? Or do I have to manually tell it to rebuild being that its on a attached Powervault MD?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

PowerVault 124T & 6gbps HBA controller losing connection

Dear all,

We have a strange problem connecting a Dell PowerVault 124T LTO5 Autoloader via a Dell 6GBPS HBA controller card with a dedicated PowerEdge R720 Server (Win2012R2).

The Problem is that the server loses the connection to the Autoloader during write operation. Shortly after starting a backup job (Symantec BackupExec 2014SP2), the operation fails with the above error.

The Windows Event Log Shows a corresponding message:

Event 11, LSI_SAS2:
The Driver detected a Controller error on \Device\RaidPort0.

Things we've already tried to solve the issue:
- We have  replaced the hba controller card
- We have replaced the cable
- Finally the Autoloader itself was replaced with a refurbished device

-> no Success at all

- We have update the device drivers and firmwares.
- We have set up a second server running Win 2008R2 using another hba controller card  & cable

-> no Success

Now we are finally at the point where it is impossible for us to figure out what the
problem is. In fact all components have been replaced and also the tests with xtalk
where unsuccesfull.

Please help

Full capacity of MD3600i with NX3610i

$

Hello;

We have used a storage system, configured with 1 NX3610i controller and 1 MD3600i DAS device, so far.

It looks like that MD3600i holds 4TB disk fitted in full 12 drive bays with RAID 6 setup.

So I assume that it could give us around 40TB capacity.

However, in the FluidFS system, it gives us only 20TB capacity with 2 nodes 10TB LUNs.

I am wondering how to check up a physical disk status and RAID setup in MD3600i system.

Whenever I connect to web-based PowerVault NAS manager(Version 2.0.4700) via management VIPs of our system, it only shows current nodes and LUNs only.

And if we couldn't figure out the capacity issue, we're going to add more MD devices to increase a capacity.

I found that NX3610i can connect two MD3600i devices.

I am wondering that NX3610i can hook up with a newer MD38xxi series device instead of MD3600i?

Is it better to buy an MD1200 to attach to MD3600i in order to expand the capacity?

Thanks!

MD3000 and Seagate Drives

$

I needed to replace some of the drivers on my MD3000 so I looked up the list of certified drivers and ordered based on it. My old drivers were Seagate ST3300657SS (SAS) but also marked as Dell and the new drives I purchased are Seagate Cheetah 15K (SAS) ST3300657SS.

My MD is reporting that the new drivers are uncertified. The only difference between the old and the new is the firmware version old is ES62 and the new ones are 0008. Is there a way to get my new drives recognized and functional? I have purchased 10 and would hate they go to waste just because the documentation is incomplete.

I have configured a  MD3600f with single host (Windows 2012 R2) ,connected via 2 HBA's

When I opened the FIbre Channel Host I/O interfaces I could see only 1 Port is UP.

Please advice whether this behaviour due to multipath or any configuration needed?

Upgrading Firmware and NVSRAM on MD3220

We have an MD3220 attached to two R720's in a Vmare HA 5.5 setup.  We need to upgrade the firmware and NVSRAM before attaching a new MD1220 to it per documentation.  Can this been done without taking down the VM Hosts and VM Guests?  Also, in the latest firmware package it says to upgrade the Bridge Firmware first.  Can this also been done without taking down the VM Hosts and VM Guests?

Is there any risks or issues we should be aware of?  Any documentation anyone can suggest or videos?

Dell ML6020 firmware 660G w/LTO6 - commvault encrption

We have a customer with -

Dell ML6020 w/ 3 - LTO6 SAS tape drives firmware E6R0 and 1 LTO4 SAS firmware C7Q2

Library firmware 660G.GS007   Operating system Windows 2012, Commvault Version 10

When a job is sent with Commvault  the ML6020 firmware 660G will not see LTO6 or LTO4 tape SAS tape drives  with Encryption "application managed" .  Screen shot shows Encrpytion field as "none" for all tape drives.

However if library is downgraded to 585G.GS003 the LTO4 tape drive ONLY shows up in screen shot with Encryption "application managed".

Library firmware 585G does not support LTO6 tape drives so cannot use this library firmware nor does current Commvault Matrix compatibility chart show 585G as the library firmware to use.

Commvault Matrix compatibility chart - for entries:  OS:  Windows 2012, Dell Powervault ML6000 Series - Library  firmware shown on chart is 641G.GS103.

103 - Certified drive FW/driver revisions:

LTO4: vC7QH, LTO5: vE6Q0

LTO6: vE6R0 Windows driver: Win2k3 v6.2.1.5 (NO LTO6 support on WIN2k3): Win2k8 & WIN2012 v6.2.4.7 (Install IBM driver using "exclusive" install script).

 Questions based on above:

1) Why would Commvautl show a library firmware of 641G.GS103 and LTO6 firmware E6R0, which when applied to ML6020 library - the encyption does not show as application-managed.

2) What is meant by for LTO 6 install IBM driver using “exclusive” install script ?

If anyone has suggestions, greatly appreciated.  Commvault is saying it is a library issue.

Thank you.

Trouble converting FileSystem metadata with fscdsconv in Linux (Veritas Storage Foundation)

$

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of migrating a Solaris 5.10 server to Linux Red Hat 6.4

At this point, I'm trying to convert the byte order of some volumes that come from Solaris in my Linux server using the following command:

/opt/VRTS/bin/fscdsconv -y -e -f /tmp/vxConv/dbtemp01.tmp -t os_name=Linux,arch=x86 /dev/vx/rdsk/dgtemp/dbtemp01

Note: Because of the text formating, the above command could span several lines, but I'm executing it in just one

And I get the following errors:

UX:vxfs fscdsconv: ERROR: V-3-20012: not a valid vxfs file system
UX:vxfs fscdsconv: ERROR: V-3-24426: fscdsconv: Failed to migrate

Searching for a solution of these errors in the Veritas forums, I've found this post, where the user mikebounds gives some steps to migrate Solaris to Linux. I've found that I've replicated these steps but I get stuck on the fscdsconv because the beforementioned errors

Does anyone know what could be happening here or have any sugestion to share?

Software Versions involved:

  • RHEL 6.4 x86_64
  • Veritas Storage Foundation Enterprise 6.2.0.100 on Linux
  • Solaris 5.10
  • Veritas 5.0 on Solaris
  • Disk layout v7
  • vxfs filesystem format

Thank you very much in advance for any help/ideas to solve this

Best regards

Raul
