md3000 degraded drive channel

my md3000 is telling me:

Degraded Physical Disk Channel

Storage array:  SAN_01
Degraded physical disk channels:  0,  1

I've collected a 542kb Support Bundle...but this forum has a 500 kb upload limit, what's up with that?

If there's some other trick to uploading a bundle let me know - I'd appreciate any help.

Which PowerEdge Lowest Noise?

I have a PE T610 that is used as a workstation and is installed in a habitable room rather than in a dedicated server room.

Fan noise is a little on the high side so i am looking for ways slow down the fans to make the unit quieter.

So my question is what controls the speed of the fans on the T610, is it the BIOS, iDRAC, the installed OS or a combination?

Has anyone tried a software solution with any success?

Oh, and the BIOS and other firmwares are the latest available from Dell :)

Max disk size in a PowerVault MD1000?

$

The latest support matrix -- last updated in 2012 -- shows only 2TB drives.

We are approaching the year 2016.  Is 2TB still the maximum drive size usable in an MD1000?  Is there any reason that filling an MD1000 with 6TB SATA drives will not provide 90TB raw capacity?

Thank you.

Problems with PowerVault TL2000 and IBM ULT3580-HH3

Hello,
Could you help me with the following problem:
Since a couple of weeks ago suddenly my unit started failing and the backup software (backup Exec 2010) shows tape alerts frequently.
I've updated the library firmware 3573-TL to C.30 / 3.20e but the issue continues.
Now I'm trying to update the drive firmware but I can't find the right one.

Could you tell me where can I find the last drivers for the library and the IBM drive?
Or help me to solve the symantec problem because today 5 of 22 tapes are recognized as bad tapes.
Thanks in advance

Dell Powerfault MD 1220 - Cannot Read Data

Dell Powerfault MD 1220 - Hard drive shows data but cannot access. Disk Manager says to Initialize. This sits at a Datacenter offsite. I'm told there are Amber lights flashing and I just found out its out of warranty.

Ran a mountvol on this and drive is mounted but cannot access data

Any suggestions? Could it be a faulty cable? What would turning the Storage Unit off and on do? I need to access the data on this. Please Help!!

Direct-Attached MD3860f Array, 60x 8TB drives, and creating a 300 to 400 TB drive in Windows Server 2012 R2

(repost from the EQ forum, where I put this the first time, by mistake)

We're extending the storage for a PE 730xd backup server with 24 internal drives by adding an FC-attached MD3860f aray, with 60x 8TB drives.

We've kicked around 10, 12, and 15-disk RAID LUNs (RAID5 or RAID-dual-parity). 5x 12-disk RAID-DP LUNS is our most likely layout. We've tested a RAID-DP disk rebuild, and it took 40 hours, so RAID5 probably isn't going to work.

From multiple LUNS, we want one big drive in Windows. We could do this with a logical drive spanning 5 LUNS/volumes, but Dell PowerVault support folks cautioned us not to do this.

We could look at Windows Storage Spaces, but that doesn't work for FC (or iSCSI) drives.

We could use Dell Dynamic Disk Pools (recommended by Dell support) but these max out at 64 TB per virtual disk, so we would still have to link/stripe/extend these drives together in Windows.

So... how do people do this with MD3 arrays?

Is there another layer of striping, or logical drive creation across LUNs, in the MD3 that we're missing?

MD3200 cant see host identifier in MDSM

I has a Windows failover cluster consists of 2 PE 720 servers and MD3200 SAS array and I need to upgrade it to 2012R2 from 2012. Also I have MD3600i connected to this cluster for temporary VM storage migration. After updating VMs should return to MD3200.

  • First I migrate all VMs to node2 and remove node1 from cluster.
  • Then I delete host mapping of node1 from cluster hostgroup.
  • After I update node1 to new version and create new cluster on it. Move all VMs to new cluster.
  • Then I try to restore Host mapping on the MDSM for updated node2, but MDSM cant see his HBA.

MDSM didnt see any unmapped identifiers.

I tried change SAS cable - nothing changed.

SAS HBA Driver is installed and enabled. SAS channel physics is up.
I have not any ideas why it so.

Do I have any way no know HBA WWNs to add they manually?

PowerVault hardware snapshot provider seems buggy - it crashes a lot, with heap corruption error codes.

Hi,

The PowerVault management DVD includes a hardware snapshot provider for Windows, so 3rd party software can make the SAN take snapshots.

This is crashy and unreliable for me, and appears to have been like that for literally years.

  • Has anyone else seen this?
  • Does anyone know anything about configuration which is necessary to make this work reliably?
  • Does anyone at Dell know how often this has been reported and why it doesn't seem to have been fixed, or why the driver can't gracefully handle problems without crashing?

I've had to abandon the dream of backups over 12Gbps SAS connections, reading at 700 MB/s, and fall back to 1Gbps network backups. Veeam can't help. Dell support can't help so far.

:(

Details below

This hardware snapshot provider is useful for backups, to trigger snapshot creation and mounting in ways that the normal smcli.exe tool doesn't support.

When I try to use it with Veeam backup and replication, it crashes out on me with exceptions in the event log. When I look around the internet, other people have problems getting it to work. I have an open support call, but since it wasn't a break-fix situation, storage ProSupport couldn't do a lot - they raised a case and it's open, but the advice so far boils down to  "restart the service" (which doesn't help) or failing that, restart the storage array (ouch - but it's the driver which is crashing, not the SAN).

The program crashes with heap corruption error codes. It smells incredibly strongly like a bug in the driver. I'm working with brand new Dell servers, MD34 series storage, Windows 2012 R2, and all the latest firmwares and patches on the servers, storage controller and OS - but you can look around the internet back to 2011 and find people mudslinging about this driver:

Apparently, they know that CSV backups are not supported (buggy) in their VSS providers, and because these SANs are not even produced by DELL, and they just resell from LSI, they don't care and won't do anything to fix it.

 - from www.veritas.com/.../backup-exec-2010-and-dell-md3000i-vss-provider-issues

You can find people with Server 2008 R2 having issues - in this case, the same problem with "LocateLuns" that I'm getting -> http://forums.veeam.com/microsoft-hyper-v-f25/dell-md3200i-hardware-vss-t30269.html

I tried downgrading the snapshot driver, as they did, and it made no difference in my scenario.
The hardware snapshot provider version has not changed in the July 2015, or December 2014 releases of the PowerVault management DVD - ~ 18 months.

There seem to be two main results online:

1) People who don't want SAN snapshots and/or don't have a premium snapshot license; the resolution is to uninstall it, e.g. en.community.dell.com/.../19522253

2) People who want to use it, but can't, or couldn't make it work.

There are not many options to configure in SMRegTool.exe, and I think I cycled through all reasonable combinations. The most useful Dell guide I've found is http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/hyperv_data_protection_guide_on_%20dell_powervault_md_series.pdf which explains SMRegTool settings - "Allow unregistered initiators when masking volumes" and the reasoning behind them.

And a stopped service (on multiple Hyper-V hosts / backup host), and a failed backup, and abandoned SAN snapshots I need to clear up by hand. "Exception code: 0xc0000374" appears to mean heap corruption - memory corruption in code in SMProvider.exe

Premium snapshot license costs many hundreds of pounds - who buys it, if the driver to use it with Hyper-V backups is unreliable? What else do people use it with? Or what conditions are needed to make it work and be reliable?

MD3600i Disk Group Failure Can't Replace Physical Disk

$

I have an MD3600i with 5 disks in a RAID5 Disk Group. Two of the disks display as having gone bad. I replaced both disks with spares and tried to follow the Recovery Guru procedure in the Array Management Window. The two new disks now display as being optimal but unassigned. When I try to invoke the Replace Physical Disk procedure the option is unavailable from the menu.

How can I restore my array back to functional health?

OMSA not seeing Perc H810 controller

I have installed a Perc H810 controller with a MD1200 array on an IBM X3850 M2 server, running Windows Server 2012.  Windows can see the controller and configured arrays and can access the raid volumes without any issues.

I am trying to install and configure OMSA to manage the disk volumes.  I have installed OMSA v 8.2.0.  When I log in to OMSA there is no information available on the Perc H810 or its raid sets. I just see an empty tree on the left hand side of the management screen under a "system" heading.

Are there some software components that I need to install along with OMSA in order to be able to manage the Perc H810 disk volumes?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello,

I have a MD3620f with two controllers (slot 0 and slot 1), configured with 3 virtual disks, where two of them have preferred path as slot 0 and the other (the third VD) uses the slot 1 as preferred owner. When I run the "Verify Disk Media" of "! QLogic Fast UTIL "in the VD that uses slot 1 everything is okay, but when I run the other two VD's which preferred owner is slot 0, returns me the following error:

SCSI Command Error

SCSI operation code: 2F

SCSI sense key: 06

SCSI additional sense code: 8B

SCSI additional sense code qualifier: 02

Can somebody help me?
