MD3220 No Service Interface Access, SOD Halted.

i have a MD3220 with dual controllers (N98MP), and am having trouble accessing the Service Interface from the console. After it is booted, I press Break to bring up the service interface prompt, but when i enter the <S> it does not prompt for the password, its just blank and it will not accept any commands. There is a tRAID NOTE: both controllers must now be reset. SOD had been halted.

The array does get a dhcp address but the MDSS software fails discovery, auto and manual.

II need some help. I have a read out of the console if that will help.

thanks

PowerVault 3200i - DiskPool and extra enclosure MD1200

I have a MD3200i and recently added the MD1200, all have 900GB/10k disks registered in MDSM with no issues.

I have accidentally allocated the MD1200 disks to my existing single diskpool. This isn't what I wanted to do. I wanted to create a different storage pool for these disks.

Question, is it possible to remove the MD1200 allocated disks from the existing diskpool without deleting it (its in production can't be disturbed).

My single Disk pool has a single virtual disk and I haven't allocated any of the MD1220 space to this virtual disk. It's just in Free capacity of the Disk Pool.

Appreciate some incite if it's possible.I don't have any external hardware capable of shifting the data around and recreate the disk pool.

MD3200 and R710

Is the R710 and MD3200 supported for Windows Server 2012 R2 for Hyper-V clustering?  I was thinking of setting up a two node cluster for experimenting and testing.

I would use two R710's and a MD3200 for shared storage.

PowerVault MD3220i Error (Insufficient Cache Backup Device Capacity)

Hello All,

I appreciate your time and assistance with the following question.

I recently upgraded to the latest firmware on my PV MD3220i and installed the corresponding NVRAM update.

After installing the update, I am getting the following error in the MDSM.  I checked the cache backup capacity and the total used are both reporting 1680MB.

Is there a reason that the error is occurring and what is the best approach to fixing this issue?

I checked the forums but didn't see anything specific besides replacing the module or upgrading the actual cache memory.  Otherwise, the unit is working without issue but just like most of you, I hate that blinking amber light in a perfectly blue data-center :)

Thanks!
Omar

MD3000i Battery replacement

Hello,

I have one MD3000i require to do battery replacement.   It is a single channel Storage.  Reference to others post the steps is I think is about:

1. Stop all activity to the array

2. Umount the virutal disk from host.

3. Power off the RAID Enclosure

4. Power off the host machine which attached if possible.

After replacement done.

1. Power on RADI enclosure

2. Power on hostname machine which attached

3. Check mount point.

Question:

1. The above steps is correct.  Any comment?

2. Does it require to reset battery age? As some new version of MDSM did not have this features.  So how to do it from SMCLI or execute script if need?

Thanks!

PowerVault 110t LTO-3 Displaying Error (Code: 5)

Hi,

I have a Dell Powervault 110t LTO-3 tape drive that is out of warranty. Yesterday I turned it on to make a tape backup and was presented with error code 5 or 6, I am not sure because the one LED that distinguishes between the two is broken. I retrieved a manual that said it is a hardware error (I assumed it was error 5). I first put it into maintenance mode and tried to run a diagnostic. It starts the diagnostic (Option 1 in maintenance mode) and it runs for about 5 seconds then gives me error code 5 again. I contacted support but they want around $500 to speak to a tech and documentation is very hard to come by online. Since it took me awhile to find the manual, I have left a link below. My main question is what I should do and is there any other more specific codes I can get, that would provide more detail about what the actual hardware problem is? I am a hardware guy myself and am not afraid to solder or mess with anything inside the drive so any suggestions would be much appreciated! Just to let you know, budget wise, this is going to a youth film crew who need a cheap and easy way to archive projects digitally. I would love to present them with this for a Christmas present of sorts, but it needs to work first!

Thanks,

Brandon

PowerVault NX3100 - error in Main System Chassis

I need assistance with troubleshooting this powervault -  Tag # 2V3RNQ1

The unit is displaying a blinking orange light on the front of the unit.

I performed a restart/reboot on the server on Jan 2, 2016 because I could not see three external disk drives on the unit that are connected to a PCIE USB 3.0 card.   After rebooting they displayed and worked successfully.

In Dell Open Manage Server Admin there is a red x beside Main System Chassis. When this is expanded there is a red x by Hardware Log.  When this is expanded below are the messages:

HI,

The MD3800i offers 2x 10Gbe ISCSI ports per controller but also lists 2x 12Gbps SAS-IN Host ports.

Are these available for Host use and can we concurrently connect ISCSI hosts and SAS hosts to the storage system ?

Thanks,

Remove disks from Disk Pool on MD3220i

Hi there

We recently added 3 new HDD's to our MD3220i and added them to the wrong disk pool via MDSM. We need to remove the disks from the pool to add to a separate disk group.

I've searched all over and haven't been able to find anything on how to do this. Anyone here have experience with this or at least know of a reference that outlines this process?

Thanks!

Decrease Latency on MD3200i

$

Hello, I have a MD3200i. It is used for CSVs running hyper-v VMs in a Microsoft cluster, and another drive on another host. The latency has been increasing as activity has been increasing. There are two VMs I want to have the best performance.

Would putting these two VMs on their own CSV help? Right now they are on the CSV with 12 other VMs. Do you have other recommendations?

Any suggests on how to find the bottleneck or the slowest point - network, controllers, disk access...?

I see much information on the performance tab in MDSM, but I have no idea what to compare it to or what's good and what's bad. Is their any document the specifies suggested, good or bad values metrics and objects?

The Latency reading from MDSM is much lower than from another source (Veeam ONE Monitor). Could this mean the network is the bottleneck?

Any help or insight would be great. Thanks,

Ken

MD3620i High Latency And Low Throughput

Hi Everyone, I have a big issue and was hoping someone can shed some light. We have a dual controller MD3620i with 22 disks in one disk group running RAID 6. Drives are 900GB 10k RPM SAS. On top of this we created a single virtual disk with a little over 16TB of space. The SAN is directly attached to a Poweredge server running Server 2012 R2 using an Intel x540 dual port 10gbe network card. Port 0 on controller 1 connects to port 0 on the Intel NIC, port 0 on controller 2 connects to port 1 on the NIC, both connection use short CAT6a cables. The virtual disk was presented to the server using iSCSI initiators and MPIO is enabled. The virtual disk shows up as a 16TB  D: drive on the windows server. The issue is, performance is terrible.  Copying files from this volume we get 40MB/s, task manager shows active time to be almost 95% and average response time time for the disk at 500ms. During transfers our cpu spikes and we see System Interrupts using anywhere from 5-10% of cpu. With this many spindles we should be flying. The SAN and the Intel x540 both have the latest firmware and drivers. Any ideas? Thank you.

MD3000i Chronic Failed Battery

I have a MD3000i with dual controllers (firmware 07.35.39.64). Recently, batteries seem to fail in controller 1. Some batteries have worked for 4-5 months while others (newly purchased, supposedly new batteries) have failed after the learn cycle.

I have tried a number of things, including:

  • upgrading the firmware to the level above (this is the most recent for the MD3000i, right?).
  • reseated the controller each time a battery is replaced, tried an old battery to see if the issue is with the controller, etc.
  • Powered down the entire system then restarted.
  • Manually reset the learn cycle from the command line.

What else could I try in this case?

I have noticed that each battery seems to have a manufacture date that is 2011 or earlier, could this be an issue?

Configuring Powervault MD3000 on Linux.

Hello people:

To be honest, my experience witn SAN are very limited and we just recieve a MD3000 to be installed on Red Hat Linux distribution. However I followed the instruction in orden to can use it. I run all the software requiered but when I try to open the SM, it saids:  "Storage management software cannot determinate if you have a valid network configuration from this client. If you are running on a Unix platform, please ensure that there is a host specified in te "host" file in your /etc directory." Although we will connect the host with MD3000 vía SAS Controller and no iSCSI.

Maybe I forgot to do something. Thanks in advance for your technical help.

Kind regards.
