PowerVault LTO5-140

We have this unit (external) and it just started giving us an error yesterday. The error code on the front was displaying 6. So I did Function code 1 diagnostics per the documentation that I could find. It did not complete correctly because the tape did not eject and no 0 was displayed. After the diagnostics run it goes back to displaying a 6. I have tried three different tapes that are in our current rotation, and two brand new tapes and get pretty much the same results, although with one of the new tapes I did get a 7 error display. This unit is no longer in warranty, and although I could possibly get it up to speed on warranty, that doesn't help me with the current backups. What can I do to further troubleshoot this unit?

Thank you in advance...

PowerVault LTO3-060 - Media Failure

$

Hi All,

I have a PowerVault (LTO3-060) where its 'Clean' and 'Fault' status LEDs are flashing which indicates a media failure. This happened only recently. I've used a cleaning cartridge and tried with all my data cartridges which worked previously; but now the device is only showing media failure.

Could my PowerVault device is faulty? Or could it be coincidence that all my data cartridges are faulty (which I doubt so)?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Upgrading a PowerVault Physical Disk Firmware

Hi there

I need to upgrade the firmware of a handful of hard drives in our MD3220i. I know I've done this before a year or so ago, but I can't figure out how to do so again.

The disk firmware page here does not have the "disk file" format it appears MDSM requires. For kicks I tried running the Windows version on our management server that MDSM is installed on, but get an error saying it's not compatible.

While I don't recall how we did this before, I don't remember it being a difficult process, so I'm hoping I'm just missing something obvious.

Thanks!

MDSM v11.20 not launching create virtual disk window

I recently updated my firmware and MDSM to the latest version.  Today, I was needing to create some virtual disk, but when I click on Create Virtual Disk nothing happens.  I've never had this issue previously, so was wondering if others are experiencing the same thing?

I've tried reinstalling, rebooting, making sure all Windows updates are current, installing to a different machine, turning off firewall, changing compatibility settings, etc.  Servers run on Win 2012 R2, firmware 08.20.12.60, Powervault MD3620i.

Everything on the SAN says optimal and I haven't noticed any other issues or errors.  I just can't create virtual disks.  I have another enclosure arriving next week and would like to get this cleared before installing that.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

PowerVault MD3200 / Storage Manager upgrade

Hi there!

I just got a new PowerVault MD3200. I installed the Storage Manager software on a laptop and I tried to connect to the MD3200 for the first time. It found it on the network, it recognized, but it can't manage it. I see the "Storage Array Unnamed" and when I right click on it and selecting "Manage Storage Array" I am getting the following message.

Then I click on YES and I am getting the following:

Any idea what is wrong, please? Isn't strange showing the same version on firmware and on appware and at the end not being able to manage it?

If someone knows what can I do, I would really appreciate to help me by telling me what's wrong here.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Extending an array on an MD3200 + MD1220

Hi there!

I wanted to ask if it's possible to extend an existing array without needing to delete it. For example if we have a MD3200 full with 12x 450GB SAS 15k 3.5" HDDs on a RAID5 array and a MD1220 connected it to it but with just 4x 960GB SSD Drives on a RAID5 array, can we expand this second array by adding extra drives? Or it's necessary to move the data somewhere else and destroy the existing array and rebuild it, instead of just adding more drives on the existing array.

Thanks a lot in advance for your replies.

PowerVault TL4000 ISCSI Bridge Factory Reset

My organization was recently given a PowerVault TL4000 to use for backups from CommVault. We've been able to get the device configured so that we are able to access the Libraries and Firmware. However we are unable to access the SCSI Bridge. We've spoken to the old organization we acquired the hardware from and they don't have the configurations in order to restore and rebuild the device. We were wondering if there is a way to manually reset the ISCSI Bridge, so that we can access the device and configure it to work with our network.

New Drives in MD1000 Issues

I've put 5 new 1 TB SATA HDDs into our MD1000... the drives show on the support matrix for MD1000.  2 out of the 5 drives show up as Ready in OMSA but 3 of the drives just have an 'Execute' button under status, show no bus protocol and are missing other pieces of information.  There are no tasks to execute so the button doesn't do anything.  The drives show with green lights and I see no errors in the logs.  Is there something I can do to bring these drives to ready?

  Thanks.

Connecting PV TL2000 with LTO6 tapes to HP DL380 G7

Hi,

I am in the process of replacing an aging server being used to run backups to the TL2000, new hardware happens to be HPas that is the new company standard, I was looking at the compatibility matrix for HP hardware and noticed nothing there appears to support LTO6, are there any HBA cards I can get for my HP server that will still be compatible with my current tape drive and tape configuration?

thanks

Adding Second MD38xx SAN

We are currently running a vmWare 5.5 cluster of (3) Dell R720 servers, each with (2) 10GB iSCSI NICs connected to an MD3800i via a VLT domain of (2) Force10 S4820T switches using host vSwitch2. There is also a 3220i, which is accessed via (4) 1GB nics on each host, connected to a Force10 S50N switchstack using host vSwitch1.

Life is good and getting better ... so ...

We are going to retire our 3220i and replace it with a new 3820i. In the interest of preserving free ports on the Force10 VLT domain, we would like to stay with only (2) 10GB nics for iSCSI access and simply define (2) more iSCSI ports on vSwitch2 .

Currently, vSwitch2 on each host looks like this:

iSCSI Port7 - IP Address: 192.168.150.12 active vNIC is vmNIC9

iSCSI Port8 - IP address: 192.168.151.12 active vNIC is vmNIC11

We are proposing to add (2) more iSCSI ports using the same vNICS, thus:

iSCSI Port7 - IP Address: 192.168.150.12 active vNIC  vmNIC9

iSCSI Port8 - IP address: 192.168.151.12 active vNIC  vmNIC11

iSCSI Port9 - IP Address: 192.168.152.12 active vNIC  vmNIC9

iSCSI Port10 - IP Address: 192.168.153.12 active vNIC vmNIC11

Can anyone point out where this design might have problems. I seem to recall being cautioned about running traffic bound for two different subnets over the same iSCSI ports.

Thoughts please?

Dell Powervault 114X - USB - 500GB - Write Protect On

We have a Dell Powervault 114X that is hooked up to a Windows Server 2012 system via a single USB Cable.  The Powervault 114x has only a single RD1000 drive installed in it using TJKJC 500GB Cartridges.  Windows Server sees it as an external USB drive just fine.  It has been working for about 1.5 years.  We use BackupExec 15 to backup some data to it.  We have 4 external cartridges that we swap out for backup purposes.  As of last week, I'm unable to write any data to the cartridge.  I cannot "drag-and-drop" files from Windows nor use Backup Exec to write data to it.  I can read data just fine.  The Dell RD1000 Windows utility shows that the drive is "good", but shows the cartridge as Write Protect: ON.  There is a physical tab on the cartridges that allow write protection, however they are all in the unlocked position.  It is happening on all of the cartridges we have.  I have rebooted the Powervault 114X and the server without any change.  Any ideas what might be causing this?  Thank you.

MD3460 File server cluster

Looking at getting a MD3460 with a mix of big capacity disks, some 10k and some ssds and clustering to two servers as a file server. To give around 80tb useable.

Currently have some older Equallogics that I want to replace with this setup.

Have around 50 users, mixed use.

Is this suitable for a business of this size as our primary file server. Is the hardware reliable?

TL-2000 backups failing- help troubleshooting drive -vs- card

$

I have a Dell T-610 server that backs up to a TL-2000 tape library, it has a single LTO5 drive in it. Setup has been working almost flawlessly for years. Backups have recently begun failing, troubleshooting at the server shows a timeout and reset of the HBA card that communicates with the TL-2000. So it could be an issue with the card, or the library has a problem and isn't responding. I have the ITDT-DCR tool, the standard test fails the performance step on most runs. Again, since that's run from the server I'm not sure I can rule out the card, especially since performance is the only step that does not pass. I have the OpenManage-like web console to the TL-2000 open, it seems to pass all of the minimal testing that I can throw at it from there (this testing does not pass through the card). I've dumped the Bin files and other logs from the drive, but I can't make any sense of them. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I go about determining which part might need replacing?

Hi,

Is there a way to perform a factory reset on MD3860f that has been given a wrong netmask and now became inaccessible through the management ports?

Unless there is another way of changing netmask - CLI? Serial?

Thanks
