neshsurf,
Can I have you pull a support bundle from the MDSM (Modular Disk Storage Manager) so we can see what is going on in the back ground that can cause this issue. I will be sending you a direct email so when you get that support bundle please send it over for me to review.
Your RAID array that is internal to the server will have better performance then your array that is attached via SAS. The reason is when it is writing to the internal drives it is one less step then when it has to transfer the data over to the external array. You can use tools like IOMeter and that will allow you to measure the IOPs that you are getting.
Hi Can someone point me to the correct Management tools for the MD1200
Thanks
Mike
How old is your cleaning tape? You may need to try a new one and see if error persists. Also how old is the media you are trying to write to? Old media will give excessive soft write errors that will cause unit to request cleaning. I would also advise to make sure the backup software drivers are all up to date. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
Is the MD1200 connected directly to a Dell Server? If it is then you would use the Open Manage Server Administrator that you use to manage the server. You will have a Storage section where you will find the array. It is it daisy chained behind a MD3XXX then you would use MDSM (Modular Disk Storage Manager). Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
We have used multiple cleaning tapes, brand new ones at that, the media we are writing to are about 1 month old tapes and brand new tapes as well all our backup software drivers are up to date as well.
Any other suggestions?
Correction...The backup media and cleaning tapes are new January 2013 and has been in a 4 week rotation from January 2013.
Then I would like for you to pull the drive logs so we can take a deeper look. I will send you a direct email that you can reply to and send me the log files. Once I get them I will take a look and see what could be causing this to happen.
After looking at the drive dump file I see the Tape Drive firmware is a little out of date. I would start by getting that updated to the latest version. I also see you are using HP LTO 5 media. I have seen issues in the past when using HP media as they would wear down the drive and eventually require a replacement. I would advise that you use either Dell, IBM or Fuji media.
Kenny, Many thanks can you point me in the direction on where I can download the drivers to update the firmware, and how to do it ?
Kenny,
I am also not usng any LTO 5 tapes I am using HP LTO 3 tapes... so I am not understanding
Has anyone else tried applying a SNMP Community String or User Password to their Dell PV TL2000 via the web management interface only to find out that the firmware (even the most current version which is C.00 / 3.20e) does not understand/accept any special characters in these two fields?
Was working on configuring the SNMP settings today on our tape library which we have had for 8 months now. When I entered our typical READ ONLY community string name in the web interface, the system yelled at me. The error was "Invalid community name! Only alphanumeric characters allowed. Only 31 or less than 31 characters are allowed for the community name." So I checked, and low and behold our community name was only 18 characters. However, it has a special character in it; specifically a "?". When I remove the special character, the system takes the community name just fine.
Same happens with passwords, however, the system doesn't even tell you that it did not accept the new password. In fact, it doesn't tell you anything at all after clicking SUBMIT. But if you use a password with special characters in it, it will now work; NO special characters and it works just fine.
I know this is only a tape library but come on Dell; any network security minded person will tell you that a combination of both upper and lower case, numbers and special characters should comprise your SNMP community strings as well as your passwords. So why does the firmware NOT support it.
Finally, I opened a support case with Dell regarding the issue and was in essence told to blow off and that there was nothing that could be done. OK....so what is the formal process to bring to the attention of Dell a Bug (which to me this is) in their system and that it should be corrected?
Hoping to hear back from a Dell Rep regarding this issue. Thanks in advance for allowing me to vent. Other than this issue though, this tape library with dual LTO6 tape drives in it is head over heels better than the current tape library the company was using when I got here last year; loving the TL 2000.
Sincerely,
Carey D.
I miss read that in the log but that could be part of the issue as using LTO3 media in a LTO 5 drive. Can you try some LTO 5 drives and see if the issue continues. I am checking into a couple things on that FW update.
To add to Kenny; if the MD1200 is connected to a non-Dell raid controller, or it is connected to a Dell raid controller (PERC) that has been put in a non-Dell server, you may have to configure the raid in the raid controller bios or for a non-Dell raid controller use the software from the raid controller vendor.
any update or link on this?
thanks
These are out of warranty from Dell. We decided to go back our vendor and see if we can't get a solution or replacements. Thanks for everyone's help.
how do i monitor the md 3200i systems with snmp? I dont see an option anywhere to confgiure snmp
The defaults in OMSA are typically the best choice. For very specific situations other settings may be better.
These were the design limitations set forth by the manufacturer and ok’ed by Dell. Both limitations and/or requirements, depending on how you want to look at the concerns, are documented within the User’s Guide:
For SNMP Community Names:
f. Community Name - An SNMP community name is a text string that acts as
a password to authenticate messages sent between the SNMP remote
management application and the library. Enter your preferred name, or leave
as “public”. The Community Name is limited to 33 alpha-numeric characters
(A-Z, a-z, 0-9).
For the password:
4. Enter the New Password . The password has a maximum of 10 characters (A-Z,
a-z, 0-9, @, <hyphen>, <space>, <period>).
In regards to you not getting an error msg when a password is not accepted, I will send a message to our engineering team and let them know that a design enhancement is recommended by an end-user for their consideration.
