Specific situation here is volume performance. Any more information?

thanks

Specific setups may be highly critical database setups you may want to disable write cache (set it to write through). It slows you down, but ensures that if the raid controller sends the write confirmation back to the OS, it has actually been written to disk and isn't in write cache.

PInout image above is based on post by MightyElectro, but using the correct pinout numberings for DB-9 and PS/2 standards. I've also verified that these are correct here in our lab with a PRC cable and multimeter.

Thanks JIMNIM for the great layout you provided. I've made my own adapter and cable before for this and if anyone needs one and doesn't feel comfortable trying to make one they can contact me and I can probably work something out. The cable I made is USB to Ethernet to PS/2 and I made the Ethernet to PS/2 cable for the MD3000 to go along with all of my other proprietary cables that I can just plug into my USB to Ethernet console cable that I use for routers and switches etc.

Install PowerVault MD3200 Direct Attached Storage on VMware Essentials

Hello, I am having trouble getting my ESXi boxes to see a PowerVault MD3200 Direct Attached Storage array. This does not appear to be a very common setup, as I have had a difficult time finding documentation that is helpful, nor have I found a thread in the forums. So I am hoping someone here can help.

My setup:

  • 2 Dell Powervault R710 servers
  • 1 Dell Powervault MD3200 SAS storage array
  • vSphere Essentials v 5.0.0
  • vCenter Server v 5.0.0

Both R710s are running ESXi 5.0.0 and have mutiple VMs on each my vCenter Server is one of the VMs

Here are the steps I took:

  1. Installed an application server as a VM (2003 Server, fully patched) on one of the ESXi boxes. The application server has no role besides managing the MD vCenter Plug-in.
  2. Launched the MD vCenter Plug-in installer from the application server, providing my vCenter Server ip and login information as needed.
  3. Opened vSphere Client and confirmed that the Dell MD Storage Array vCenter Plug-in is listed and enabled Added administrative login to the Storage Administrator Role
  4. Upgraded the SAS SMI-S provider on both ESXi hosts, using the file provided by Dell with the MD vCenter Plug-in
  5. Rebooted the hosts as requested.
  6. Powered the R710s down, and installed the SAS Adapters that came with the MD3200 Array, plugged them in, powered up the MD3200 then powered up the R710s.
  7. Went into the setup on the SAS Adapters on the R710s at boot and confirmed that they can see the array.
  8. Went back into vSphere Client, right clicked the host, and started the Configure ESX Host to Storage Array for the ESXi hosts.

Everything stops here because the SAS Interfaces are not detected.  A few notes:

Running the command esxcli software vib list | grep LSI from the console shows that the SAS Provider installed successfully..

Running the command #esxcfg-scsidevs -a from the console shows that the adapter is there..

vmhba2  mpt2sas           link-n/a  sas.5848f690ecc2b200                    (0:5:0.0) LSI Logic / Symbios Logic Dell 6Gbps SAS HBA Adapter

But the HBAs are not detected when I attempt toe configure the storage array.  Hope this makes sense... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So you've had success w/ serial shell access via USB on these systems? I've not had the best of luck with that in the past, though I'm sure that's due to driver compatibility with some of the hardware I've seen people try...

ive had great luck with the usb to serial cables I buy and make so far and they work well with the MD series, even with the drivers it usually just downloads from windows update and works very easily.

Cable on the far right is the PS2 to RJ45 for the MDs I have

Other adapters are APC UPS/PDUs, switches and routers, and the blue cable is a calypso systems amplifier adapter. It works perfectly for everything I've tried it on and needed to make a cable for. I've been tired of carrying around numerous cables for proprietary systems and instead made this small kit.

With an MD1200 you cannot give a VM a single disk larger than 2TB with vSphere5.

Rumor is that vSphere6 will increase the maximum (vmdk) filesize, but that is speculation till vSphere6 is actually out.

Your only choice is to give the VM 5 x 2TB disks. You could then use dynamic disk to span them together.

However, here are a few recommendations:

- don't use raid 5 with more than 6 or 7 drives; instead move to raid 6 if reliability is important or raid 10 if performance is important

- don't use dynamic disk on top of hardware raid

Usually this means the host (or one of them if this is a cluster type setup) doesn't have a connection to one of the controllers.

Are you manually trying to register the host in MDSM, but the WWNs aren't being seen in that wizard?

I have 7 disks and configured a RAID 5.

Presented One large 10+ TB LUN to vSphere (Datastore)

Created a bunch of 2TB hard drives (vmdk files)

Used dik anager in windows to span them all together to achive my 2 x 5 TB NTFS volumes.

yes I have 2 esxi hosts. one host have 2 paths to each lun. but one host only have one path due to a failed nic. but why woul this cause the md to send these alerts? one host has 2 paths

Cannot identify Library Path in Device Manager

I have a PowerVault TL2000 with 2 IBM 3580 LTO3-HH drives. I do NOT have an iscsi-to-SAS module in the back of the TL2000. However, I do have the SAS cable plugged from the back of the TL2000 into the server, and a network cable from the tape drive directly attached to the server. I am able to see a single drive, but using TSM, I need to define a path to the library. Does anyone know what I have to do/install to be able to see the library in the device manager?

Thanks,

Don Hipp

POWERVAULT MD1000 AND 12TH GENERATION SERVERS

Is the PowerVault MD1000 compatible with 12th generation Dell PowerEdge servers such as the r520?

If so, can I install a Dell perc 6/e controller in a Dell 12th generation server?

Anything else to be aware of?

THANKS.
